Merakyat.org – Telecommunications companies in the Davao region of the Philippines are set to roll out mobile SIM card registrations in order to reach out to subscribers in far-flung areas without internet access, according to the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) in Davao.
NTC-Davao Director Nelson Cañete said that the telcos are mandated by the SIM Card Registration Law to lead the registration of SIM cards for their mobile subscribers.
However, Cañete noted that reaching mobile phone users “is a lot of work” because registration is done online and there are still many areas in the region without internet access, particularly in hinterland and coastal communities.
To address this, the telcos will provide temporary internet signal during the mobile registration process. Cañete hopes that all mobile phone users will have their SIM cards registered within 180 days of the nationwide mandatory registration, which began on 27 December.
