Filipina tennis player Alex Eala, ranked 215th in the world, will make her professional Grand Slam debut on Monday, January 9th at the 2023 Australian Open in Melbourne.
Eala, 17, will face off against Misaki Doi, a 31-year-old Japanese player ranked 172nd in the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA).
While Eala has gained experience through various professional events in recent years, she remains cautious of Doi’s veteran status as a regular Grand Slam competitor since 2010, with a best finish of a Round of 16 appearance at the 2016 Wimbledon.
A win for Eala would secure her a spot in the second round to play against either Laura Pegossi of Brazil or Magali Kempen of Belgium.
Eala has previously competed in Grand Slam events, but only in the Juniors division, where she won two Girls Doubles titles and the US Open Girls Singles title in 2022.
Prior to the Australian Open, Eala recently finished in the second round of the qualifiers at the W60 Canberra tournament and has also won two professional titles, at the W15 Manacor in 2021 and the W25 Chiang Rai in 2022.
